West Norwood Cemetery was awarded Green Flag status in August, recognising the work that both the local community and council have put into improving the historical site.

First founded in 1837 as the South Metropolitan Cemetery, the 16-ha site was a popular meeting point for the 'fashionable set' of Lambeth, built entirely in the Gothic style.
The Friends of West Norwood Cemetery Trust recently secured an initial grant of £241,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund to develop plans to "restore and improve Norwood Cemetery for future generations".
It will bid for a further £7 million in funding in order to improve accessibility, build volunteering facilities, and restore the 69 listed structures, which include the historic catacomb complex.
