Lambeth Council became the first in the country to swear in a new mayor via webcam in an online ceremony.
Councillor Phillip Normal began his year in office from his own living room last Wednesday (April 22), putting on homemade mayoral chains as council colleagues watched over the Microsoft Teams video link at a virtual full council meeting.
Cllr Normal, an artist from Kennington first elected in 2018, is Britain’s first openly HIV-positive mayor. He promised to use his year to fundraise and lobby for young LGBT+ people facing homelessness and domestic issues as a result of their sexuality.
The meeting was held on the same day a “hybrid” Parliament began in Westminster, with some MPs in the chamber and others connected via video link.
